On April 1, 2000, at the C5PBA Youth Challenge Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Norm Adelberg of Winnipeg was formally recognized as a Life member of the Canadian 5 Pin BowlersÌ Association. He joins a very select group of men and women who have been recognized for their commitment and dedicated hard work in the service of the C5PBA. In 1967, Norm was a member of the Manitoba Mixed Team who won the Western Canada Title only to be forced to play the same Western teams again as well as those from Eastern Canada to become National Champions. Subsequent to that victory, the abolition of the counter Pin by the Canadian BowlersÌ Association threw the bowling fraternity into chaos and Norm sought other pursuits than a National Title. Twice the winner of the Manitoba Open Tournament, He was also victorious in Saskatoon at the KG Open. His real talents, however, were on the administrative side of 5 pin and he worked with the Manitoba 5 Pin BowlersÌ Association from 1972 until the present day. Twice the President of the M5PBA, he currently holds the positions of Past President and Vice President. Norm was recognized as a Life Member of M5PBA for his many contributions to the provincial association. In 1981, Canadian BowlersÌ Congress President Dave McNutt asked Norm to join the National Board as Awards and Entertainment Chair. In this position, he was responsible for banquets at all national events. His legacy of that position was, with Al Hong of Alberta, to create a Hosting Manual that is still in use today. As an added benefit to the CBC, he and Al set up a hot press at each national event to make custom shirts, thus avoiding excess CBC inventory. When his term expired in 1986, Norm continued to attend national Board Meetings as one of the representatives from Manitoba. He was also asked to serve as the Western Representative to the Executive Committee. A strong champion of "the bowlers", Norm could argue black was white and was infamous for resurrecting a long forgotten motion from the minutes to substantiate his position. Norm Adelberg continues to actively promote our sport and to ensure that all members are represented. We congratulate Norm Adelberg on his designation as C5PBA Life Member and look forward to his participation for many years to come.

Excitement began to mount on Thursday, March 30th as teams from across Canada arrived in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At 6:30 PM all were transported to St. James Lanes to work off their nervous energy and get a feel for the lanes during a modified Baker Format Team Competition. It was a little difficult to settle down for the night as competitors awaited the real start of competition the next day. During Opening Ceremonies, all players, coaches and officials were introduced. As a warm-up to the round robin team competition, players competed in a Bogies and Birdies Skills Competition. As there were several ties, winners were declared on the basis of both Golf and Game Scores. Finally, it was time for the main event. At the end of Round Robin Play, four teams advanced to the Championship Play Off Round. Match A featured Prince Edward Island against British Columbia with BC prevailing 6 to 2. At the same time, Match B saw Saskatchewan pitted against Newfoundland with Newfoundland taking all 8 points. Match C pitted PEI against Newfoundland with a PEI win of 7 to 1. That set the stage for a rematch of Match A for the Championship Final. Each team took two matches and tied on a third, but PEIÌs team total of 1239 to BCÌs 1084 gave PEI a three point advantage for the win. The results of the singles race were closely guarded until the Victory Banquet at the International Inn Ballroom. The winners of the $1000.00 Scholarship Award to further their education were Kelly Trainor, age 15, of Prince Edward Island who averaged 260.90 and Patrick Bloomer, age 17, of Alberta who averaged 273.98. Although they both have a few years left to compete in youth events, they have served fair warning to Open players that, if this competition is any example of their talent, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. In addition to the recognition of the Scholarship winners, the C5PBA this year announced an All Star Team of those finalists for the top award. As well, Life Membership in the C5PBA was presented to Norm Adelberg of Winnipeg for his many years of dedicated service to both the Manitoba and Canadian 5 Pin BowlersÌ Associations. The Victory Banquet concluded with a Much Music video dance as players celebrated new friendships and new experiences. Many thanks to Co-Chairs Henry Timmer and Debbie Link and all of their volunteers for an enjoyable event. Glenda Gallant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, has been a driving force in the PEI 5 Pin Bowlersí Association since its inception. In the 20 years she has served as their Secretary-Treasurer, Glenda has established herself as a tireless worker tackling everything from selling tickets at the mall to sewing the Open Contingent uniforms. In turn, her community has recognized her as "Citizen of the Year" by the Sherwood-Parkdale Lions Club and "Volunteer of the Year" by radio station CFCY. But Glendaís scope has extended far beyond Charlottetown, as she has been a key player in 5 pin bowling in the province. Both youth and adult levels have benefited from her expertise as a coach and her skill as an organizer and fundraiser. During her 18 year involvement with the Canadian 5 Pin Bowlersí Association, she has represented PEI at meetings of the Board of Directors, and as both Coach and Manager of the PEI Contingent at the National Open, the C5PBA High Low Doubles and at the C5PBA National Youth Challenge. In Winnipeg in April 2000, Glenda teamed up with Ricky Burns to coach the PEI Youth Challenge Team to a National Gold Medal. This victory was especially significant as it bodes well for the future of our sport In PEI. Glenda Gallant was recognized as Life Member of the Canadian 5 Pin Bowlersí Association in May at the 2000 C5PBA Open Championships in Hamilton, Ontario.
